For me Halloween starts the 2 months of a sugar high that is so very hard to avoid. Who is with me? There is no other time of year that we come face to face with so much JUNK!! But, man is it good! Candy and desserts that are only made this time of year.
Sugar around every corner from now until January. We will be bombarded by sweets!!
So, my struggle (along with many others) is the balance between sampling all the sugary bliss and keeping my waist band in check. For me this is the hardest. So, today I will offer a few tips I use to keep you on track and still enjoy the holidays.
I put this one first because it is the hardest. To simply avoid and not partake in the desserts. For me, if I get that one fix….. it’s over!! I won’t stop until it’s gone. So, in certain settings I won’t even start. At work is one to avoid. The reception desk always has candy so don’t go by the desk. Take another route. Avoid it if you are tempted. It will be in your best interest. This one is the hardest but, most effective.
Always have healthy snacks handy. So, when you are trying to avoid the sweet treats all together OR you have eaten the 3 pieces you have allowed yourself for the day. Knowing you have a healthy snack at your fingertips is helpful. Be prepared for these moments of weakness.
Pack lunch and snacks and you will be set. Also, don’t bring change to work if you have vending machines. When the urge hits and you want sweets you will most likely head for the machines with change. Again, be prepared and don’t bring change or cash.
BUY YOUR 2ND FAVORITE CANDY!
Silly but, it makes sense. Buy candy that you sort of like but, it isn’t your favorite. That way you won’t be as tempted to eat it. You can have the control to walk past it.
If you must have the piece of cake, consider a smaller portion size. Make it a conscious effort to eat less of it. It will be like having your cake and eating it too. Get it? Cake? I know I am so funny.
But, really consider the number of sweet treats you are eating and maybe cut that amount in half. I think this would be a fair trade, don’t you?
Last but, not least
BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!
Think about it. Nothing tastes amazing after brushing your teeth. Am I right?
This would be the second-best tip to use besides avoiding it all together. Brushing your teeth will make your dentist and your figure happy. Nothing but, water tastes good after this. So, brush your teeth and get your water in all at the same time. A simple silly little trick that works.
Keep a tooth brush and paste at your desk. When you want to dig into that cake in the breakroom just go brush your teeth.
It is a win win. You may brush your teeth several times a day but, at least you won’t feel guilty for eating two pieces of cake. You will have your cake and clean teeth too. Your next check up will be on point too.
So, enjoy the holidays but, be smart and aware of your choices. Know you can enjoy the sweets in moderations.
Feel confident in your choices. Recognize the victories big or small. Each right choice gets you one step closer to your goal.
