Fixing your "non-healthy" recipes is really hard to do if you are trying to get healthy right? I am here to tell you how you can have your cake and eat it too. (like seriously have both) The great treats you LOVE with a healthy twist. Here are some great substitutes that will you do just that.
Zoodles for pasta
This trick will help you cut the carbs while giving you a burst of flavor. Thin strips of zucchini. No boiling and all you will have to do is saute till the "zoodles" are tender. Set aside and make your spaghetti. Use the same pan. Easy clean up too.
Nuts or seeds for croutons
I do this one all the time. Pick your favorite nut or seed (or a little of both) and top your salads with it. You will have the crunch but, not the calories. Win win!!
Unsweetened apple sauce for sugar
I know what you are thinking it will never be as good but, I am telling you it is a MUST try. It makes your cookies so moist and still so tasty.
In a 1:1 ratio, but for every cup of applesauce you use, reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by 1/4C.
Yes, soft drinks (sorta)
Seltzer water with citrus
Sparkling water with fruit
Gives you the carbonation with out all the junk in a coke. I know how you LOVE those cokes.
Vanilla extract for sugar
Cutting sugar in half and adding a teaspoon of vanilla as a replacement can give as much flavor with less.. well, sugar. Next time you make cookies cutting 2 tablespoons of sugar and adding an extra 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla.
Plain yogurt with fruit
Plain yogurt in stead of prepackaged yogurt. Plain yogurt add fresh fruit or a hint of honey. Less sugar then prepackaged. It tastes better and is fresh.
Frozen or fresh fruit over canned fruit.
Less sugar for sure. Plus, fresh or frozen tastes better.
Popcorn for potato chips
You won't get as much grease and of course it is better for ya.
Bison or turkey over beef
Bison is a leaner meat with more protein then beef. Turkey is lower in fat, higher in protein and iron. (so is Bison for that matter)
Oven for pan frying
Putting breaded Panko pork chops in the oven is healthier then putting them in oil on the stove and they are just as crunchy and delish!!
Avocado mash for mayo
1/2 an avocado mashed with added seasons (your choice) on a sandwich is a healthy alternative to mayo.
Most of these changes you will not even notice. Others you will discover taste better then the unhealthy way. Either way, just give them a try and let me know what you think. I am guessing you will be pleasantly surprised.
