The new year is upon us and we are all thinking about losing a few pounds or just get a little healthier. Right, after the holidays we say. Well, the holidays are almost over. Here are a few ways to get you started on your healthy/fitness journey for the new year. Foolproof ways to make your New Year’s resolution stick.
WRITE IT DOWN
Write down your goals. Thinking of a resolution to me sounds so “BIG” making and setting goals sounds more obtainable to me. If resolution works for you then use it other wise they will be goals. When you write down your goal and make it specific you are real clear on where you are going and what you need to do to reach the goal. You set a date and then you know what you should be doing each day to get to your goal by that date. For example, “I want to lose 20 pounds in 6 weeks and I will accomplish it by going to the gym 3 times a week”.
This goal gets you out of your comfort zone but, it is still doable. Consider using the SMART model
BREAK DOWN THE GOAL
Resolving to do 10,000 push ups in a year is very intimidating. But, breaking it down to just 28 push ups a day seems so much more manageable. Break it down into small “bite size” pieces. It will help keep you motivated and focused because you can SEE your goals becoming reality.
When you reach a “bite size” goal treat yourself. Not with food but, with workout clothing, a movie you have been wanting to see. Pedicure or manicure are other great ways to reward yourself for reaching a goal. Workout gear is always a fun way to reward yourself. It will help keep you focused and motivated to keep pushing to the next “bite size” goal you have set.
QUESTION YOUR MOTIVES
In the beginning it is easy to set your motivations. Wanting to get those 6 pack abs will get your butt into gear for sure. This will last for only so long. So, what to do to keep you going?
Look inside and ask yourself WHY. Why am I doing this? Why did I make this goal in the first place? What do I want to achieve?
Find the answers that “light you up” with a powerful emotion response can help motivate you on a deeper level and reach your goals.
KEEP A SCHEDULE
Always schedule your workouts sessions in advance. Write them down on the calendar Sunday so, you will be ready for the week. Pack your gym bag and workout clothes the night before. Have it waiting by the door. You will be prepared and ready to go. No excuses.
Writing them down right next to the important work meeting or the kids practice will give it priority. Make it happen each day.
Make it work for you. If getting up at 6 am to workout isn’t something you are willing to do, then make time after work to get it in. This is for you to work it in your schedule. You have control over it. Make it work for you!!!
BUY COOL GEAR
New workout gear is a way to keep you going. Who doesn’t feel confident and awesome in new workout clothes? I know right?! Besides if you are going to spend the money on the gear you can’t just let it sit in your closet, right? It will boost your confidence and make you feel happy to have new stuff. So, be proud and happy and work your butt off in your new gear.
REEVALUATE GOALS OFTEN
Looking at your goals and realizing they are not working isn’t a bad thing. This will keep you focused. If you sign up for yoga but, it stresses you out instead of making you calm well, then looking at a different activity may be in order. There is nothing wrong with that. Change it up and get moving!! Always try different things you may find a new passion or hobby that you wouldn’t have discovered any other way. Keep looking at the goals and how you will get there.
I know you are thinking what the hell does this have to do with anything? The truth is we get so hard on ourselves when we set goals. Fitness goals may be more intense also.
It takes time to change old habits to new ones. So, if you slip up or even fall off the wagon completely. Give yourself a break. Suck it up and be nice to yourself and start over.
Forgive and give yourself a break. Think of yourself as your best friend. How would you talk to them? EXACTLY!! It will all work out, be patient with yourself.
Take the next few days and think about what your goals are and how you are going to reach those goals.
