If you are like most of the population, you are NOT getting enough sleep. We all realize this but, still continue to go with out or very little sleep each night.
** Side note for new Mommas sleep is a luxury and you should ask for help to get more for yourself. Also, sleep when the baby sleeps worry about dishes later.**
First of all let me explain something that some of you may have forgotten or don't really think is important. Sleep is the time when our bodies repair the damage we did to it during the day. So, if your not getting enough sleep your body isn't repairing it's self. In turn causing more harm, that could be life threatening or a long term health issue that could have been avoided.
We all know that sleep deprivation causes brain fog, slow reaction time, and a ton of other "brain troubles". We spend the day in a fog just waiting for the work day to be over so we can go home and sleep.
Sleep helps us in so many ways.
Sleep boost immunity
Getting enough sleep will help you fight off all the yucky illnesses going around. It will keep you strong and free of any virus going around.
Sleep helps you get skinny
Yep, getting enough sleep on a regular is believed to increase the level of Leptin (a chemical that makes you feel full) and reduces the chemical Ghrelin (a hunger-stimulating hormone.) This making you lose the weight.
Sleep boosts mental wellbeing
People with anxiety and depression were surveyed to calculate their sleep habits, it turns out that most slept less then 6 hours a night. This causing the anxiety and depression to worsen at times.
It also, effects your mood and your relationships. You are grumpy and short tempered with others. It will give you clarity, and have better reaction time.
Sleep increases sex drive
Men and Women who don't get enough sleep have lower libidos and less interest in sex. Meaning you have low sex drive. Enough said.
Sleep deprivation could increase health risks
Obesity, heart disease and diabetes are among a few health risks that could develop because of the lack of sleep. Dangers of having an accident in a car or at work will increase as well. Is it really worth it? I think not.
A few signs to let you know your not getting enough sleep.
* Waking up tired and wanting to nap through out the day.
* "Micro-sleep" a short burst of sleep while still awake.
* Feeling like your brain is in a "fog".
* Slow reaction time.
* Not able to think clearly or form memories.
You can never get the lost sleep back but, a few things you can do to get in the habit of getting more sleep is "make it up" on the weekends.
Sleep a few more hours. Go to bed when you are tired and then let your body wake up on it's own in the morning. No alarm clock set. Then start going to bed sooner during the week.
Doctors say get 8 hours of sleep but, not all of us need 8 hours to function properly. But, at the LEAST get six hours in a night any less is just crazy talk.
I am one that loves my sleep. I try to make sure I get enough for me. I notice I am sick less and I feel alert through out the day. No need for caffeine to get me and keep me going.
So, make it a point to get your sleep in. You will be glad you did.
