What does mindfulness really mean any way? Webster says "The quality or state of being conscious or aware of something." It is a choice we make. I discover I have been depressed and just can't seem to shake it. I decide to talk to my doctor. That is being mindful. To notice I was feeling depressed and also, to make an appointment to see my doctor. That is part of being mindful. To be aware of your feelings, actions, and thoughts means you can change them to whatever you want. You have the choice to be happy, or dance in the living room with your partner or to think positive.
My first suggestion is to watch your thoughts and feelings for a day. When starting to feel stressed look at it and notice what you are saying and feeling towards yourself and what triggered the stress. Just watch and listen to your thoughts. The next day try these tips to help ease the stress.
Here are a few ways that I have found to be mindful and decrease my stress. We go through the day being busy and stressed and overwhelmed and just frazzled at times.
TAKE A BREAK
Taking a break or at least stepping away from the stressful situation can be very helpful. Taking a moment to yourself will help you clear your head and decrease the stress level of the situation. This isn't always possible but, counting to 10 in your head, before saying anything can help also. But, removing yourself from the situation would be the best option if possible. Come back when emotions aren't so high.
This one is easy and can be done at your desk or car, just about anywhere. Changing your breath can change your attitude. It will help calm the body and mind. When you feel the anxiety rising and the stress go up. Take a moment and breathe. In with the good out with the bad. Let go of what is bothering you when you release. Breathe it out. Keep breathing in and out slowly until you can feel yourself coming back to normal. You can do this as many times as you need to through out the day. Do it before bed to help you relax and fall asleep.
I can not stress this enough!! Start your day with meditation. Starting this practice will help deal with the stress as it comes up. You won't be so overwhelmed because you have already practiced calm. There is no wrong way to do it. Really. The more you do it the better you will get. Find a GUIDED meditation if you are just starting out. There is a voice telling you what to do. Just listening to gentle music will work too. Thoughts will come in, let them go. Meditation will calm you. Things that bothered you before will at some point not bother you as much or at all. Your thoughts will become more positive through out the day. In turn dealing with the stress will become easier. Just try it for 10 minutes a day for 30 days. Tell me if you feel different. :)
Stop thinking you are broken or damaged when I say these words. You are not broken or damaged. Personal development shows you how to keep your life on the positive side. Shows you how to cultivate more joy and happiness. It enlightens you to find your strengths and your purpose and go be big in the world. How ever that looks for you. In doing this, stress will have to decrease. You can't be happy and stressed at the same time. It has to be one or the other at a moment. Make sense? When you are living a more positive life the stress starts to take a back seat. Your not worried of others, you are more concerned with your own happiness and well being and what you have to do to keep the peace for yourself.
The tips I have given today will help you in the moment of stress and decrease the stress before you are even faced with it. Having yourself a morning routine with meditation and personal development will honestly, be a life changer. I know it was for me. Try it for 30 days. Like, seriously, 30 days and see if you can't tell a difference. I know you will.
